Frequently Asked Questions
Working With Frank
-
An insurance broker helps you understand your risks, arrange suitable cover and manage your insurance over time. If you need to make a claim, your broker can also work with the insurer on your behalf.
-
Frank is a 100% New Zealand-owned commercial insurance broker with a full disclosure approach. We charge a disclosed fee for our commercial broking services, invest in practical risk management and have a dedicated claims team to support clients when they need us most.
-
We act for our clients, not insurers. Our job is to understand your needs, negotiate with insurers on your behalf and advocate for you at claim time. Your insurance policy remains a contract between you and your insurer.
-
We work with businesses across New Zealand, from small and growing companies to organisations with complex insurance needs. Our clients include contractors, transport operators, property owners, rural businesses, professional firms, healthcare providers and not-for-profit organisations.
-
No. We have teams in Hamilton, Auckland and Wellington and work with clients throughout New Zealand.
-
For commercial insurance, we rebate insurer commission to our clients and charge a disclosed fee for our broking services. We’ll tell you what that fee is before you accept our advice. Different remuneration arrangements may apply to domestic insurance or referrals, and we disclose these where relevant.
-
Appointing Frank gives us authority to act as your broker. It allows us to obtain information about your existing policies, speak with your insurers and seek terms on your behalf. We can have an initial conversation about your needs before you appoint us, but we need that authority to carry out a full review and negotiate with the market.
-
No. Appointing Frank as your broker does not, by itself, change your insurer or cancel your policies. Your insurance contract is with the insurer, and we can take over the management of your existing cover. We’ll discuss any changes we recommend before they are made.
-
An existing claim stays with the insurer that provided the cover when the incident occurred. Once appointed, we can review where the claim is up to, work with the insurer on your behalf and help you through the remaining process.
Choosing and managing cover
-
That depends on what your business does, the assets it relies on and the risks it faces. Cover may include property, business interruption, liability, vehicles, cyber or specialist insurance. We’ll learn how your business operates and recommend an insurance programme that fits.
-
Yes. Once appointed, we can review your existing policies against your current business activities and discuss any gaps, overlaps, exclusions or limits that need attention. We’ll explain what we recommend changing and why.
-
At least once a year, ideally before renewal. You should also contact your broker when something significant changes rather than waiting for renewal, so your cover can be reviewed while the change is happening.
-
Tell us about changes to your activities, products or services, premises, locations, equipment, property values, or where you work. Acquisitions, major contracts, and changes that increase your exposure are also worth discussing. If you’re unsure whether a change matters, let us know and we can check.
-
Your sums insured should reflect what it would cost to replace or reinstate the property you’re covering, based on your policy’s terms. Review them as your business grows or costs change. A professional valuation may be appropriate for buildings or other significant assets; Frank can help you understand the insurance requirements, but we are not valuers.
-
Material damage insurance covers insured physical loss or damage to business property, such as buildings, stock or equipment. Business interruption insurance is designed to help with lost income and additional costs while your business recovers from an insured disruption. It generally follows an insured material damage claim, although some policies include extensions for other events.
-
Public liability insurance generally responds to claims that your business accidentally damaged someone else’s property. Professional indemnity insurance is designed for claims arising from an error, omission or alleged failure in the professional services or advice you provide. The cover you need depends on your work and your policy wording.
-
If your business relies on digital systems or holds customer, employee or other sensitive information, cyber insurance is worth considering. It can provide specialist support and cover certain costs following events such as a cyberattack or data breach. Good security controls remain essential; we can help you assess the financial exposure that may remain.
-
Yes. We work with New Zealand insurers and, where appropriate, access specialist markets overseas. We’ll take the time to understand the risk, present it clearly to insurers and discuss the available terms with you.
Claims and Payments
-
Make sure everyone is safe, take reasonable steps to prevent further damage and record what happened with photos and relevant details. Contact Frank as soon as possible, even if you do not yet have all the information. For theft or burglary, report the incident to the police.
-
You can complete the relevant online claim form on our website or contact our claims team directly. We can help you work through the information needed and guide you through the next steps.
-
Our claims team works with you and the insurer, helps gather the information required, keeps the claim moving and advocates for you where questions or disputes arise. The insurer assesses the claim under your policy terms.
-
Claims management is included in our service fee. If a claim calls for an additional service that could involve a cost, we will discuss it with you first.
-
Monthly payments may be available through a premium funding provider. This is a finance arrangement and usually involves interest and other charges. We can explain the options and costs before you decide.
